Check for rot- Look around posts where they are in contact with the ground or concrete. Any part of the deck that is touching the ground can be suspect of rot.
Check for Cracks in decking boards. More then anything, a cracked decking board is a cosmetic issue but can become dangerous for bare feet and tripping. Replacing a decking board is easy but tough to match.
Check the railings. Handrails and posts can become loose, adding additional screws can be a quick fix.
Check out the Ledger. The ledger is the framing portion that attaches the deck to the house. Make sure the flashing isn’t warn out and replace any missing nails. An improper ledger installation is the cause of most decks collapsing and if you see an issue it would be best to call a professional.
Check for raised nails. Nails can raise due to temperature and moisture changes. Keeping the nails in the decking boards is also safer for bare feet and if you shovel you deck in the winter, you already are aware of the annoyance of having a raised nail when you hit it with the shovel.
